Butterflies quietly perched on our hair, on our shoulders, on our hands, making us fall in love with the thought that we were “transmigrating”, getting lost in a fairyland. I love nature and love to travel, so when I heard that Cuc Phuong National Park has a rich world of flora and fauna and especially butterflies fluttering in the sky after every rainy season, I always wish to visit Cuc Phuong National Park near Tam Coc Ninh Binh. Taking advantage of 2 weekends, my best friend Chi and I took each other on the road from Hanoi. We took a bus to Gian Khau T-junction, TP. Ninh Binh and then take the car from there to go about 40km to Cuc Phuong National Park. There are 3 guest houses here: Gate Garden, Ho Mac area and Bong area (located deep in the national park, 20 km from the gate).
At first we planned to stay…
At first we planned to stay at the Garden Gate near Tam Coc Ninh Binh, but after hearing the taxi driver say that Bong is the center, there are more fireflies and butterflies, we decided to go there. Bong area has 3 types of houses: dormitory (4 beds 1 room, shared annex), stilt house (shared sub-building) and bungalow (closed sub-construction). The dormitory area and the stilt house are about ten steps apart, the stilt house is right next to the restaurant; and the bungalow area is about 450 – 500m away, get out of the stilt house, turn right and go straight to the place.
The day I arrived, the price for a room in the Garden Gate was 800,000 VND, the dormitory room in Bong area was 450,000 VND, and the bungalow room was 500 thousand VND. Visitors also have to pay 60 dong for the entrance ticket. The bungalow area has a fairly large lawn, lots of sunshine, and butterflies in the morning are very concentrated. Later I heard that there were a lot of fireflies in this place at night, but unfortunately, I didn’t know where to go that day. It was very dark, sporadic rain, we just watched the fireflies around the dormitory. The Bong area does not have electricity to the grid, but only a generator, operating 2-4 hours in the evening.
On the way from the Garden Gate to Bong area…
On the way from the Garden Gate to Bong area, there were also countless butterflies fluttering after us. Butterflies dangling in strings, swarms in the air, bewitchingly beautiful. Most of them are white butterflies, small and very fast flying, so it was difficult for us to take pictures. So I just let my soul fall in love with butterflies, standing still. The best friend was also silent so as not to alarm these beautiful creatures. The butterfly season in Cuc Phuong lasts from late April to May.
The weather is drier at this time, so you don’t have to worry about insects and squeezing. However, if you want to have the most perfect butterfly-watching day, you should monitor the weather to choose a sunny day. It is best to go during the week, because on the weekend there will be many people to visit, the butterflies are afraid and scattered. Cuc Phuong forest near Tam Coc Ninh Binh has more than 400 species of butterflies with different colors of red, orange, yellow, white and blue… but the most popular is still the white butterfly. As soon as there is a small sound or vibration, the butterflies will immediately fly up, the whole sky will be filled with color spots, making visitors who “miss” to witness will linger, nostalgic forever.
