We found a household with a tradition of 3 generations of hand-woven sedge mats in Phu Vinh street Phat Diem town, Kim Son district near Tam Coc Ninh Binh. We found out that this whole district is mostly families. has “retired”, and her family of 3 (Mung – Vui – Tinh) of the Nguyen family is still clinging to the extremely rare and very special mat weaving profession.
Talking with us, Ms. Mung very excitedly expressed her wish: “If your generation continues this profession, they are ready to give you a set of tools. But, in this era near Tam Coc Ninh Binh, there are not many people who do crafts in a few years, I want to buy a hand-woven mat like this, I can’t find it anywhere.”
Bringing us to the house for more than three decades, it is the same five generations of Ms. Tuoi following the profession left by her parents and grandparents in Phat Diem near Tam Coc Ninh Binh. The unmarried woman sat on a worn-out chair with a jute set and a tray, and she meticulously introduced each stage of the formation of a product. Next to her is Ms. Tuoi (the sedge-driver), the two women rhythmically, gracefully, each soft movement does not miss a single strand of sedge to gradually form a “checkerboard” mat that looks very beautiful.
